Kolkata, September 22, 2006: The West Bengal government is likely to allot a 3-acre plot near Kolkata to the Bangalore-based Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), for setting up a power equipment-testing laboratory, which is presently operating in a WSEB property. The West Bengal Power ministry has requested CPRI to put in a formal application to the state government for the land and the land is likely to be allotted in Rajarhat. This laboratory will be set on a similar scale as the major ones that are in operation at Bangalore, Bhopal and Hyderabad. Future investment on this power equipment infrastructure would be 100-150 crores.
The State Government has cleared Hindustan Motors' request for sale/development of 314 acres of land at HM's Uttarpara plant in West Bengal. The company sees opportunity to set up a township comprising residential, IT Parks and Auto-ancillary parks.
Sale proceeds would also help the company financially in its plans to revive the plant.
The Eastern India Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Federation (EIGMEF) is to set up an Apparel Park in Mahisabathan in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The park is to house garment manufacturing units from fabric to finished product. A number of units are focused on exports.
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has indicated that the state government is willing to provide between 400 to 500 acres of land free for setting up of plastics industry in Midnapore, Jalpaiguri and Coochbihar districts. Companies establishing in Midnapore could cater to the Bihar and Jharkhand markets, while those in Jalpaiguri and Coochbihar could target North-east markets. He made this comment at a workshop on Schemes and Programmes for Development of Micro and Small Scale Industries.
Hindustan Motors Chairman, Mr C K Birla, has said that the company has sought permission from the West Bengal government to allow use of 314 acres of land at its Uttarpara plant for real estate development. The company is considering development of IT and auto components parks. Mr Birla made his comments soon after the company's AGM.
A new ship building facility & SEZ is proposed to be built of 1,500 acres of land near Haldia in West Bengal. Mr. P.K. Ruia the promoter is seeking an allocation of 1,500 acres of land from the government for this purpose. The project entails an investment of Rs. 1,000 crore.
In the meantime, Tata Steel has proposed an SEZ on 3,000 acres of land in Gopalpur, Orissa. The focus of the SEZ woiuld be metal manufacturing and ancillary development. The project is expected to cost Rs. 8,000 crore.
