Civic facilities for the urban poor | INRnews

New Delhi, India, December 20, 2007 - Based on National Sample Survey 61st Round data, the Planning Commission has brought out the figures of number of people living below poverty line in the urban areas. The Planning Commission has used two methods - Uniform Recall Period method and Mixed Recall Period method. According to Uniform Recall Period method, the estimated number of urban resident below poverty line is 8.08 million. According to Mixed Recall Period method, the estimate is 6.82 million in 2004-05.

The Government has launched Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to address the issues of provision of Housing and other civic facilities for the urban poor in 63 cities in the country under the Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) Programme. Other cities/towns are covered under Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP). Both BSUP and IHSDP are under implementation since December 3, 2005. The Mission period is 2005-2012.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja in the Lok Sabha today, in a written reply to a question by Shri Hansraj G. Ahir.
