CII INFRA 2007 to propose 'MAP' region for development in Tamil Nadu | INRnews

Chennai, India, December 15, 2007 - Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Tamil Nadu State Council is all set to propose the development of 'MAP' region (comprising Marakkanam, Arakkonam, and Pulicat) to build a strong Greater Chennai Region for balanced and inclusive regional development in Tamil Nadu.

INFRA 2007, being organized by the CII in Chennai on 18 December 2007 will present the MAP idea - “Tomorrow’s Chennai”, with an objective to evolve a  regional plan to  fuel the growth of the region as well as ease Chennai City, which is in the brink of saturation.

Mr S Jaipal Reddy, Hon’ble Minister for Urban Development, Government of India will be the Guest of Honour and address the Inaugural Session on 18 December 2007.   Mr Parithi Ellamvazhuthi, Hon’ble Minister for Town Planning and Urban Development, Government of Tamil Nadu will deliver the Special Address.

Mr L K Tripathy, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Tamil Nadu and  Ms Kanimozhi, Member of Parliament, Government of India will also deliver the Special Address at the Inaugural Session.  Mr G R K Reddy, Chairman, Infra 2007 & Vice Chairman, CII Chennai Zone will deliver the Theme Address.
                            
INFRA 2007 will deliberate on key areas such as;

•        Reforms in PPP policy in creating new urban frontiers
•        Benefit of MAP for the local communities
•        Road map to ensure livelihood opportunities and employment 
         generation through inclusive industrial development
•        Need for a regulator, clear project structuring, single window
         clearances, etc
•        Various aspects of infrastructure planning needed for long term
          planning

At a Special Plenary Session on  ‘New Urban Frontiers – MAP Unveiled’ the panelists will deliberate about the contours of the proposed MAP vision and the issues to be addressed in making it a reality.   Key speakers at this Session include; Mr K Deenabandu, IAS, Secretary – Municipal Administration & Water Supplies, GoTN; Mr T R Srinivasan, IAS, Vice Chairman, CMDA ; Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice Chairman, Cognizant and Mr R Sellamuthu, IAS, Secretary – Housing & Urban Development, GoTN and Mr Shrinivas Kowligi, Advisor - Urban Infrastructure, Janaagraha.

Key expectations of the private investors from a PPP policy with a view to attract large scale investments to the MAP region will be discussed at the Session on  ‘Fostering Socio Economic Zones – Encourage PPPs’.  Mr Vikram Kapur, MD & CEO, TNUDF; Mr M Murali, Managing Director, Shriram Properties and Dr R V Nathan, Vice President, IL&FS Cluster Development Initiative Limited will address the Session, amongst others.

Mr M F Farooqui, IAS, Secretary – Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu will address the Session on ‘MAP : Inclusive Development for Economically Excluded’ which would discuss the potential impact of MAP on job opportunities and the road map to ensure an inclusive development outcome.

Mr C P Singh, IAS, Transport Commissioner, Government of Tamil Nadu and  Mr K Allaudin, IAS, Secretary – Highways, Government of  Tamil Nadu will discuss the various aspects of infrastructure long-term planning in the region at the Session on ‘Infrastructure Provisioning – Transportation, Roads & Water’.

The Valedictory Session would focus on the Governance Structure of MAP, and it would deliberate on the road ahead in the context of the existing provisions and the  issues need to be addressed in the formation of a regional authority cutting across all areas.  This Session will be addressed by Mr Gopal Srinivasan, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu; Mr Shrinivas Kowligi, Advisor - Urban Infrastructure, Janaagraha; Mr T V Somanathan, IAS, Secretary – Planning & Development (Special Initiatives) Government of Tamil Nadu and Mr V Ravichandar, Advisor, CII TN City Connect Programme.
