World Bank opens new 120,000 sq.ft. office in Chennai

Chennai, September 22, 2006: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr. M.Karunanidhi opened a new World Bank office in Chennai on Friday. The new office building is supposedly one of the World Bank's largest offices outside Washington D.C. and will house a number of support services.

The 120,000 sq.ft. facility is on a 3.5 acre plot and can seat a staff of about 450. The bank chose Chennai as a location keeping in mind the availability of skilled manpower, real estate, IT infrastructure.

Inaugurating the office, the Chief Minister said that the state of Tamil Nadu has an enduring relationship with the World Bank, including five World Bank funded projects worth Rs. 7,211 crore being implemented in the state currently.

Even the UN Secretary General is supposed to have mentioned the Chennai office as an example for the UN to follow. Mr. Karunanidhi said, "Many high value added activities are now based at Chennai instead of Washington".
