West Bengal struggles to find land for IT infrastructure

West Bengal appears to be facing a shortage of available land for the many companies wanting to set up IT campuses and InfoTech parks in the state. Amongst others, TCS is reported to be seeking 50-acres, Satyam 25 acres and also Ascendas and Infosys have been scouting around for land in West Bengal.

With land in short supply around Kolkata, the state has requested consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers to help identify alternative cities that could host IT parks based on availability of land, transportation facilities, and telecom infrastructure. In particular, PwC is to rank Durgapur, Haldia, Kharagpur and Siliguri for their suitability. A report is expected within 4 months.

As another solution, the state government may want to look at the Mumbai model of developing idle industrial land. According to a report by consultancy firm Webcon, almost 40,000 acres of land at factories in the state is lying vacant with many of the units going bankrupt. Creating solutions to unlock the land here, as a productive asset, would help spur the local economy and also solve the land shortage situation.
