Vadodara-Surat highway to be finished in a month | INRnews

Ahmedabad, September 27, 2006 : The repair work on the NH 8 between Vadodara and Surat, damaged during the recent floods, would be completed within a month at a cost of over Rs 6 crore, said K H Muniyappa, Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways here on Monday.

‘‘Due to recent floods and heavy rains, some stretches of the national highway were damaged. Ninty per cent of the repair between Vadodara and Bharuch is complete,’’ Muniyappa told mediapersons at the Circuit House. ‘‘The remaining work is expected to be completed within one month’s time,’’ he said adding that he had personally conducted a survey of the highway yesterday. ‘‘The damages caused by floods (in central and southern regions of Gujarat) is heavy. Money for repairing of the roads has already been sanctioned and is available,’’ Muniyappa said.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will be spending Rs 5 crore while an additional Rs 1.7 crore has been sanctioned by Gujarat Government, he added. ‘‘In addition to what has been released under the Calamity Relief Fund, an ad-hoc payment of Rs 500 crore under National Calamity Contingency Fund has been released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the month of August, 2006,’’ he said while talking about the flood-relief fund. ‘‘That means, so far approximately an amount of Rs 750 crore has been released by the Government of India to Gujarat,’’ Muniyappa added. The minister also said that the work on both sides of the Ahmedabad-Vadodara express highway will begin in six months.
