Tamil Nadu govt to build satellite town on 30,000 acres near Chennai
The Tamil Nadu govt is planning to acquire 30,000 acres of land for a satellite township in the outskirts of Chennai. According to the Chief Minister, Mr. Karunanidhi, land for the town has already been identified and will be purchased at the prevailing market rate. The sprawling estate is located near Chennai, south of the Vandalur-Kelambakkam road. Currently only 13,000 families inhabit the proposed site area.
The Chief Minister claimed locals would not be displaced. He said the land was located in a pollution-free area. He also clarified that only wastelands and dry lands would be acquired for the township leaving water resources, forest areas and dwelling areas untouched.
The proposed township will have all facilities such as drinking water, roads and healthcare. The Chief Minister hoped the satellite town will help to contain congestion in Chennai city within manageable levels. The population of Chennai was expected to go up to 6 million from the present 4 million level. The prevailing high density of population has already created problems of traffic congestion, infrastructure deficiency and lack of space for developmental projects.
The new township is expected to ease the burden on Chennai. But it is a moot point if people will stop migrating to the southern capital with excellent growth in the IT and industrial fields.

The Tamil Nadu government dropped its plan to built a township around vandulur because of opposition from local farmers and opposition parties. The government is now planning for a new satellite town around sriperumbudur.
