Rail-Road connectivity to Ennore Port to be expedited

New Delhi, September 13, 2006 : The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T.R. Baalu has said that the Officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ennore Port should coordinate their efforts with the Railway Officials to expedite the pending work on the Rail-Road connectivity project. He was addressing a review meeting on Rail-Road connectivity to Ennore Port Limited, here today.

It was informed at the Meeting that NHAI is implementing the project for construction of 30 kms segment of Chennai-Ennore Port Connectivity at a cost of Rs. 309 crore. The first phase of nine km segment is likely to be completed by December 2007. Lauding the efforts for the completion of 10 Groynes with 500 meters of sea walls, the Minister directed the NHAI officials to expedite the construction of additional three Groynes for the project in the second phase.

As regards the Rail connectivity to Stackyard, it was informed that in-principle approval of the Planning Commission has already been conveyed to the Ennore Port for the project for rail connectivity to the Coal, Iron and Container Terminals. Southern Railway has also approved this project in-principle at an estimated cost of Rs. 30 crore.

The Attipattu-Puttur Rail Link, one of the projects recommended by the Committee on Rail/road Connectivity of Major Ports, is under appraisal of the Railway Board. The Ennore Port is considering the option of taking up the project through SPV.
