New bridge in Chandigarh to alleviate commuter woes
Work has begun on a new 3-lane bridge adjoining the old Ghaggar bridge on NH21 that connects Chandigarh with Delhi, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Pile testing of the bridge has started and the bridge is expected to be completed in less than two years.
The old Ghaggar bridge was closed to heavy vehicles traffic on August 14th when huge cracks were detected in the structure. Only a narrow corridor has been kept for light vehicles traffic. This as well as the 20-25km diversion has caused unprecedented traffic snarls in the area.
