Indian Maritime University to be set-up at Chemmacherry near Chennai

Chennai, September 3, 2006 : The Central Government proposes to set up the Indian Maritime University at Chemmacherry, near Chennai. This was announced by the Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T.R. Baalu while inaugurating the Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign organized by the Press Information Bureau at Thuraipakkam, Kanchipuram District in Tamil Nadu today.

Elaborating on it further, he said that a legislative proposal in this regard would be placed before the Cabinet for its approval next week. Thiru Baalu also announced that the National Maritime Complex would come up on a 400 acre plot for promoting the maritime studies.

Explaining the benefits of Golden Quadrilateral and North-South and East-West Corridor National Highway Projects to the country and to Tamil Nadu in particular, Thiru Baalu pointed out that they would give employment to 45 people for every kilometer per day at the time of construction and upon completion, they would  lead to even greater employment opportunities. He also spoke about on-going works for construction of Chennai bypass, over bridges at Padi, Koyambedu, Chennai airport in Tamil Nadu.

Referring to Sethusamudram project launched by the UPA Government, Thiru Baalu said that it would lead to savings in fuel, precious foreign exchange and significant economic benefits. Turning to the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which seeks to guarantee 100 days of assured employment to a person in each family, Thiru Baalu observed that it would go a long way in removing hunger and poverty.

Thiru Baalu also announced that the Government would pass a legislation in the Parliament to declare the Buckingham Canal waterway from Kakinada to Chennai and flowing to Pondicherry as a National Waterway.

The Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Thiru K. Venkatapathy emphasized the peoples' participation and peoples support as crucial prerequisites for the success of various Schemes initiated by the Government and in this regard complimented the Press Information Bureau for launching Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign to sensitize people. He spoke in detail about the Rajiv Gandhi Vidutikaran Yojana which seeks to provide electicity to villages not yet electrified. He also referred to the Rajiv Gandhi drinking water mission, Mid-day meal scheme, schemes for rural housing, rural roads etc.

Thiru Suba Thangavelan, Minister for Housing, Government of Tamil Nadu, Shri Pradeep Yadav, District Collector, Kanchipuram, Members of Parliament and MLAs from the region and other dignitaries participated in the function.

The five day Bharat Nirman Public Information Campaign between 3-7 September has separate sessions on rural development, women empowerment, education and employment featuring a galaxy of distinguished leaders, In addition, film shows, performances by Song and Drama Division, seminar, quiz and essay competitions on Bharat Nirman are also scheduled. DAVP has organized an exhibition on the occasion.
