GoI to support infrastructure development in Tripura and Nagaland

Agartala, September 22, 2006: States in the northeast including Tripura and Nagaland have sought Central support for development of infrastructure in their states.  In response, New Delhi has come up with a grant of Rs.2600 crore for the development of Agartala and Kohima cities.  The Tripura and Nagaland governments have been asked to submit a detailed project report for review by the Urban Development Ministry. Tripura alone is to get a grant of Rs.1600 crore out of the total grant from GOI.

The Asian Development Bank has also pitched in with an investment of over 260 million US dollars for the development of the capital cities of five NE states.  The project which will be completed in the next six years envisages development of roads, water supply and drainage systems and slum area development.

Urban development in all eight capitals in the Northeastern region have been brought under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission programme which has taken up improvement of basic urban infrastructure as its major objective.
