2.4 million new homes required in Delhi by 2021 - Ajay Maken

A master plan for Delhi's development requires 27,000 hectares of land to accommodate urban growth until 2021. 2.4 million homes need to be created. This is according to the Minister of State for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, Mr. Ajay Maken. He envisages that by 2045, 70% of the country's population will be living in urban areas. To put it in perspective, India has 5200 small and big towns today. By 2050, we would (according to the minister's projections) require 3000 additional townships.

It is the minister's fond hope that private builders will take up the initiative for urban development in the future, relegating the government's role to that of only town planning. Market forces should govern the rest. The minister also criticised the present Floor Area Ratio (FAR) as being artificially suppressed and advocated the removal of FAR limits to stop urban sprawl.

The minister made his suggestions at a launch function of the fourth international conference of Building Materials & Construction Technologies - BMCT 2007 - to be held in Delhi from March 24 - 26, 2007. The high profile exhibition is being organized by FICCI and the Builders’ Association of India (BAI) in association with the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP). 180 exhibitors from over 20 countries are expected at the exhibition billed as the largest event in the field of construction technologies.
