13,000 houses for urban poor in Ahmedabad and Surat | INRnews

Ahmedabad, September 29, 2006: The Centre has approved a project to build over 13,000 houses in Ahmedabad and Surat for the urban poor. The project will be undertaken by the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) under the Central Government’s Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM).

8,000 houses are to be built in Ahmedabad and 5,400 houses in Surat at a cost of Rs 58 crore. This is the first housing project for the urban poor to be approved under JNURM. 50% of the budget would come from the Central Government, 20% from the State Government, 5% from local bodies with the beneficiary having to pay only the remaining 25%.

AUDA will provide land and supervision free, and will waive interest on loans taken during this time.
