West Bengal Govt. to complete land acquisition for Tata Motors
The West Bengal Govt. is to complete the acquisition of around 1,000 acres of land for Tata Motors by October. The land, located at Singur, near Hooghly district, is earmarked for the company's small car manufacturing facility.
According to the State Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr. Nirupam Sen, negotiations on land price will begin from the end of August. It is believed a large section of farmers are already favourably inclined towards selling their land for the project.
The project attracted controversy over the supposedly indiscriminate acquisition of fertile agricultural land. However, the Chairman of Tata Sons, Mr. Ratan Tata disagreed, claiming the Tata Motors project will encourage the growth of auto component manufacturers in the state.
