Reliance Retail would like to lease Maratha co-operative stores

In a smart move, Reliance Retail has taken over local co-operative stores to make inroads into the retail sector. Not only do they usually have several branches located in prime neighbourhoods, they are dirt cheap in terms of land rentals. Moreover, the co-operative stores come with a dedicated, if not captive, clientele. Trust Reliance to make a big splash at cheap cost.

With this clever plan, Reliance Retail has already taken over Sahakar Bhandar in Mumbai and has bid for Super Bazaar in Delhi. It is now negotiating with another Mumbai-based chain - Maratha Co-operative. The chain has 17 stores in the city ranging from 500 sq. ft. to 7,000 sq. ft. outlets.

It is expected that just as in the case with the Sahakar Bhandar stores, Reliance Retail will weed out the smaller Maratha Co-op shops and focus on the larger outlets. The company is believed to have already spent Rs.10 crores to refurbish the Sahakar Bhandar chain.
