New buildings in Kerala to be screened by Pollution Control Board

If implemented well, the Kerala State Pollution Control Board's new guidelines for pollution control measures in the construction of multi-storeyed buildings is a welcome move.

Prior approval from the Board needs to be obtained before construction of buildings of four storeys and above. This includes hotels, restaurants, commercial complexes, hospitals and multi-storeyed apartment buildings in the state.

Approval will depend on the control of noise, dust and wastewater pollutions during construction. Wastewater and other wastes are now required to be collected and processed in a suitable manner. Pollution control measures also cover generators and air-conditioning plants.
