Karnataka Government inviting private companies to set up SEZs in Bangalore, Hubli
The government has approached companies such as Infosys, Mahindra and Mahindra to run Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Bangalore, Hubli and Dharwad, according to Minister for Large and Medium Industries K S Naidu. Real Estate groups like Adarsha and Prestige are also on the guest list.
Plans are on for setting up five dedicated clusters to promote industry in the state. A ‘valve’ cluster is planned at Hubli, an ‘auto parts’ cluster at Shimoga, a ‘coir’ cluster at Hassan and Channapatna, a ‘foundry’ cluster at Belgaum and a ‘machine tools’ cluster at Tumkur at a cost of Rs 40-45 crore each.
The SEZs will be set up on the Private-Public Partnership (PPP) model, according to the minister. While Infosys is interested in establishing an SEZ in Bangalore city, Mahindra and Mahindra have expressed a similar interest for Hubli-Dharwad.
The only snag is with the extent of area earmarked by the Centre for these SEZs as it is less compared to areas of SEZs in other states. But the minister hopes to correct this after discussions with Mr. Kamal Nath, Union Minister of commerce in August.
Meanwhile, the government will hasten to complete apparel parks in Doddaballapur, Bellary, Kanakapura, Belgaum and Davanagere to boost the booming garment industries in the state.
