Busiest highway in India to turn into modern, 6-lane motorway
National Highway No.8, connecting Vadodara and Surat is to become a 6-lane highway, in a project starting January 2007. The stretch famous as much for its potholes as for its dense traffic, will mark its rebirth with close circuit TV cameras, emergency communication systems, weather stations and rest areas. The new highway covering a distance of 148 kms will be complete in 30 months.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed two separate agreements with IDAA consortium and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for upgrading the highway under a BOT (build, operate and transfer) scheme. The two agreements also mark the launch of the fifth phase of the National Highway Development Project (NHDP) to convert 6,500 kms of roads across the country into 6-lane highways.
The revamping of NH No.8 will also take into consideration frequent flooding during monsoons and design an all-weather operable system. Since the highway connects the industrial centres of Ahmedabad and Vadodara with Surat and Mumbai, its revamp will only make the country's busiest highway safer.
